Chapter 5: Oversight is the fifth chapter of 5 Years Later.

Plot Summary[]

In Ben’s Dimension, the Orion Squad are shown passing time while on duty protecting the base from intruders, as Ben had instructed back in Chapter 2. A small debate is had about whether or not they should’ve left their posts to stand guard together, but they are interrupted by an alarm going off, warning the squad an unauthorized DNA signature has entered the base.

The squad gather around the teleporter ready for action, but are caught by surprise as it was just Ben and Danny returning from their mission. Ben fills the squad in on the fact that the attack might have been a diversion, and asks if there was anything happening on their end. After checking the Plumber’s logs, Ben finds two files have been mysteriously stolen and corrupted, due to GoTro’s negligence of digitally surveying the base. GoTro admits he was following Lula’s orders, and after a brief altercation, Ben leaves the room.

Later on, Rook, Ben, and Danny gather in the Plumber Base’s lobby, awaiting Gwen, Kevin, and Max’s return, reuniting the original team. Gwen and Kevin arrive with Zed, and greet Ben with the news that Max would not be joining them, despite trying to make it multiple times.

Moving back to the mission, Gwen and Kevin explain that with the help of Jimmy, they were able to identify the means of Vlad’s escape back in Chapter 3, and ready themselves to track and follow him to settle the score.

The team rigs together a Null Void Projector with trans-dimensional amplification with the aid of Cooper, as Ben explains to the Orion Squad that Cooper will be acting-commander in his absence, in reflection to Lula disobeying Ben’s orders the first time around. This causes an argument to break out between Ben and Lula, shocking all the others in the room. Ben cools down, but Lula, heated by being scolded for her best intentions, storms out of the room, disappointed in herself and lack of involvement with the current mission.

The team heads back to Earth to the scene where Vlad had escaped, and follow the temporal trail to Zim’s Dimension, where they catch the villains stealing a Dwarf Star’s energy. The team gears up for battle, and Ben unleashes the power of a new alien.

Mythology[]

  • The opening scene with the Orion Squad mirrors the opening scene in the Ben 10: Alien Force episode Above and Beyond, and uses a similar-looking location.
  • Vilgax is mentioned by name for the first time after a flashback cameo in Chapter 2.
  • Gwendolyn and Kevin's first lines (“Did you miss us? / “Hey, Tennyson!”) are a direct reference to the first time they reunited with Ben in the Ben 10: Omniverse episode Many Happy Returns.
  • The Plumber Suits that Danny, Ben, Gwendolyn, and Kevin wear are based on the Future Plumber Uniforms from the Ben 10: Omniverse episode The End of an Era, but with the colors inverted.
  • When Kevin says to Ben "I thought you said he had snow-white hair” in reference to Danny, this is taken from a line in the Danny Phantom Theme Song – the second 5YL reference to the theme.
  • Ben and Lula's relationship mirrors Ben and Max's relationship in the Ben 10 Franchise.

Differences From The Archaic Version[]

An event known as 5 Years Later: Recalibrated took place in preparation for the Motion Comic Counterpart, where Kuro went back and refurbished the first eleven chapters of the series. A large portion of the artwork was edited or completely redrawn. Many scenes were replaced, cut or extended. Dialogue was fine-tuned and rewritten, while most typos and grammar errors were corrected. Attributes that became standard to 5YL’s general art style were retroactively added in, such as a stronger difference between Ben’s lime green and Danny’s turquoise green, colored outlines and shading, refined facial features for most characters, square dialogue boxes, and the signature floating dots around ecto-energy. Every transformation used by Ben is now accompanied by an Information Hub, and each alien has colored text. While nearly every panel has been altered, these are the significant changes:

  • The first location text now reads “Ben’s Dimension: Plumber HQ: Orion-Cygnus District.”
  • The screens behind Lula now feature security footage of Plumber HQ, including rooms we will see in this episode along with Chapter 8. The computer’s controls have also been redesigned.
  • Lula now enforces her authority as captain of the Orion Squad to give validity to her orders.
  • The second location text now reads “Plumber HQ: Teleporter Hub 7.”
  • Danny is now more frightened when he teleports inside of Plumber HQ to the Orion Squad pointing weapons at him.
  • Ben, Danny, GoTro, and Lula’s dialogue have slight changes when discussing Vlad’s diversion and their recent system hacking.
  • The third location text now reads “Plumber HQ: Main Lobby.”
  • Rook now notes that the smell of Ben’s jacket is not removable.
  • Ben now correctly addresses Gwendolyn by her full first name to Danny.
  • The flashback showcasing Ben, Gwen, and Kevin has been redrawn to resemble some of Ben 10: Alien Force’s promotional posters.
  • Kevin’s joke about Ben’s jacket was slightly altered, along with Gwendolyn and Kevin’s statements on Max’s busy schedule, and their evaluation on Jimmy Jones’ discovery.
  • Gwendolyn’s mana display of the timeline is redesigned.
  • The fourth location text now reads “Plumber HQ: Transport Hanger.”
  • Ben introducing Cooper to the Orion Squad was slightly altered.
  • Additional location text “Space: Earth’s Orbit” has been added, which causes Gwendolyn’s speech bubbles to be rearranged.
  • Ben now addresses Lula as captain rather than squad leader when talking to Gwendolyn.
  • Additional location text “Earth: Just Outside of Bellwood” has been added.
  • The background behind Rook when he prepares to follow Vlad’s energy signature changes from purple to blue.
  • When the heroes follow Vlad’s Temporal Trail, their journey now takes place in the current look for the Temporal Zone which was designed by O.R.Ash. Thus, additional location text now reads “The Temporal Zone.”
  • Easter eggs in the Temporal Zone change from the Candy Bar (Jimmy Neutron), Planet Namek (Dragonball Z), and Churro (an alternate version of Kuro; a meme from the Ink Tanks’ Discord Server) changes to the Factory (Code Lyoko), The Owl House, and the Hill Valley Clock Tower (Back to the Future).
  • The location text “Zim’s Dimension” was moved until after the heroes discover their location, and now reads “Zim’s Dimension: Outer Space; Rosearik-Vasquez District.”
  • The sector of space where the heroes find Zim’s ship has been redesigned to add more planets and cleaner star textures.
  • The effects for Ben’s transformation into UltraViolent have been redesigned.

Trivia[]

  • Cooper's concept design was revealed early in Kuro's Discord as a reward for a membership milestone.
  • Chapter 4: The Fallen Gods, and this one, were originally meant to be one chapter, but was split into two in order to release chapters faster.
  • The working title of this chapter was “The Orion Squad”, but due to Ben and Danny not appearing in the previous chapter, the title was changed to ensure fans they will indeed be in this chapter.
  • It is revealed that Max had been promoted to Magistratus, the highest Plumber rank, after the events of Ben 10: Omniverse.
  • Originally, Ben was going to use a new transformation to check the Plumber's computer files, but was changed to Ben using the Omnitrix to demonstrate Ben's developed skills with the watch since the end of Ben 10: Omniverse.
  • Among the twelve Plumber HQ operatives on staff includes a Splixon Chef that was fully designed by O.R.Ash, but has yet to make an appearance.
  • The Rosearik-Vasquez District was named after Jhonen Vasquez, the creator of Invader Zim, and Rosearik Rikki Simons, the original voice of GIR.
