"You ready to go ghost again?"
Ben Tennyson[src]

Chapter 2: The Lonely Ghost is the second chapter of 5 Years Later.

Plot Summary[]

After spending five years finding his way back to Earth from his astro-isolation, Vlad revisits his old mansion, now in custody of the state, and his laboratory underneath. He spends time reflecting on his past when he is interrupted by Eon, who offers to return Vlad to his full health and strength in exchange for his services. Vlad is reluctant at first, but agrees when he realizes he has nothing else left to live for.

Back in Ben’s Dimension, Ben, Rook, and Danny attempt to figure out how to return Danny home while sharing smoothies. Danny begins to doubt himself as a hero, and Blukic and Driba begin creating their own ghost portal. Lula enters to warn Ben of a threat detected in Bellwood.

Danny and Ben then teleport to Max’s Plumbing, and come face-to-face with Vlad.

Differences From The Archaic Version[]

An event known as 5 Years Later: Recalibrated took place in preparation for the Motion Comic Counterpart, where Kuro went back and refurbished the first eleven chapters of the series. A large portion of the artwork was edited or completely redrawn. Many scenes were replaced, cut or extended. Dialogue was fine-tuned and rewritten, while most typos and grammar errors were corrected. Attributes that became standard to 5YL’s general art style were retroactively added in, such as a stronger difference between Ben’s lime green and Danny’s turquoise green, colored outlines and shading, refined facial features for most characters, square dialogue boxes, and the signature floating dots around ecto-energy. Every transformation used by Ben is now accompanied by an Information Hub, and each alien has colored text. While nearly every panel has been altered, these are the significant changes:

  • The arrangement of the first playlist of aliens surrounding Young Ben has changed, along with some of the dialogue.
  • Ben’s descriptions of Gwendolyn, Kevin, and the Orion Squad were elaborated on.
  • Ben’s reflection on his past struggles and mistakes is extended, and the flashback now features nearly three times as many aliens.
  • The first location text now reads “Danny’s Dimension: Vlad’s Old Mansion.
  • Vlad’s thought boxes are now a deep red with a purple outline opposed to a light purple with a white outline.
  • The flashback location text now reads “College: 25 Years Ago.”
  • Two additional pages were added to expand on Vlad’s backstory. We follow Vlad escaping the hospital, digging up his old Ghost Portal, getting lost in the Ghost Zone, found by Warlocks, trained by then exiled the Cult of Sojourn, witnesses Jack’s proposal to Maddie, his first transformation into his blue-skinned form, his past battles with Danny, ending with his banishment to space.
  • Eon’s deteriorating body is drawn more obviously on the exposed parts of his neck and hands.
  • Eon’s speech bubbles are now black with a pink outline, and light pink text. Selected words are highlighted in white text.
  • When Vlad refuses to fight Eon, whom he assumed to be a robber, Eon claims Vlad’s belongings are meaningless, rather than threatening to kill him. Vlad is also less frightened by Eon’s alleged attack.
  • Eon’s explanation of his abilities have changed to be less brash, and he addresses Vlad by “Vladimir” rather than “Vlad Masters.”
  • Added location text “Vlad’s Old Mansion: Top Floor Balcony” when Eon teleports them outside. More greenery has been added to the exterior of Vlad’s castle, and the clouds are now pink instead of white.
  • Sections of Blukic and Driba’s lab were redesigned.
  • All of the smoothie cups now have orange straws rather than purple.
  • Ben and Danny’s conversation about being a hero has some dialogue changes, including Rook’s follow-up line about research, and Danny’s explanation about the Infi-Map’s capabilities.
  • Danny’s false enthusiasm meeting Blukic and Driba is replaced with confusion on how long they’ve been in the same room.

Trivia[]

  • Despite featuring the most amount of aliens so far, none of them were used by Present-Day Ben.
  • The panel showcasing the original ten aliens in Ben's Arsenal resembles an old, popular wallpaper from the Classic Ben 10 series.
  • The aliens in Ben’s flashback holding onto the Annihilarrgh feature them in their 16-year-old Omniverse outfits.
  • The “25 Years Ago” flashback text is incorrect to the timeline of 5 Years Later. It was corrected to “26 Years Ago” for the episode version.
  • Multiple easter eggs are hidden throughout Vlad’s flashback, such as a silhouette of Garfield on the hospital wall, along with a Mana Puff from Minion Masters and a Gremlin in the University’s closet.
  • Vlad’s backstory in 5 Years Later was meant to be pieces together through clues woven in the comic, And Beyond, and hints dropped throughout the wiki. Though when Kuro felt the pieces weren't being put together enough for the audience to sympathize with Vlad, his flashback montage was added in the final version to clarify his character more. It has since become one of his favorite scenes.
    • Flashback Vlad is shown wearing a University of Wisconsin–Madison Sweatshirt.
    • The bulk of his backstory is original to 5 Years Later, though a portion of it features the non-canon character Sojourn.
  • When Eon temporarily restores Vlad’s youth, he returns him to his original look from Danny Phantom. While his current look in 5YL is strikingly similar, the main difference is the absence of his mustache.
  • Blukic and Driba’s lab also includes a few Easter eggs, such as a Horas head, a fusion grenade, a Unitrix, an ID Mask, and a Techadon head.
  • In front of Max’s Plumbing, you can see a poster for Insane-Man’s original character Garbage, a poster for And Beyond, and a poster for Gourmand Ramsey.
